More than 36,000 students live and study in Hannover. Leibniz Universität Hannover, originally founded in 1831, is the focal point of a vibrant scene that provides new impetuses to cultural and business life: numerous creative enterprises hammering out new ideas ensure that the transfer of high technology to industry thrives.
Moreover, Hannover is home to leading research centers in the fields of production and laser technology. Hannover’s Production Technology Center (PZH) puts into practice the vision of bringing science and industry together under one roof: it has more than 400 highly qualified scientists and technicians from all fields of science and engineering engaged in collaboration with partners from industry. Hannover Laser Center provides a powerful incentive for companies to set up research and development facilities close by and also promotes training closely linked to industrial practice. In close cooperation with the Hannover Laser Center and the Department of Gravitation Physics at LUH, the Max Planck Society has set up a section as an international center for gravitational astronomy in order to carry out research into the “big bang”. The privately run GISMA (German International Graduate School of Management) is a cooperation partner of Purdue University in the US.
With a student population of 21,500, LUH is one of the largest institutions of higher education in the federal state of Niedersachsen. It offers more than 60 degree programs ranging from natural and engineering sciences, law, business studies and economics, the arts and humanities, to social sciences and education. LUH provides degree- and continuing education programs which are orientated both towards demand and quality. The large choice of programs at LUH permits students to shape their studies individually through a large number of possible combinations.
As far as research is concerned, LUH has a marked profile and a series of interdisciplinary focal points. This is shown by collaborative research centers, research groups and cooperation programs with other institutions of higher education and research institutions.
The availability of appropriate specialist literature is also decisive for the quality of teaching and research: with its Technical Library, Hannover has the German Central Library for all fields of technology and their basic sciences, especially Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. The Center for Applied Linguistics and Special Languages, the federal state of Niedersachsen Computer Center, the Campus Center and the Career Service are additional facilities which help and support.
The collaborative research centers sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG) are important instruments for promoting and consolidating toprate research at a university. At Leibniz Universität Hannover numerous collaborative research centers - especially in science and engineering- create a very attractive research location.
As a result of the German excellence initiative two research clusters of the Leibniz Universität Hannover have been distinguished as so called excellence clusters.
On the occasion of its 175th anniversary, the University of Hannover has been renamed “Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover” in 2006.
