Germany has a temperate climate. A raincoat and an umbrella will come in handy, since rain is frequent – even during summer. It is possible to purchase everything in Germany, for example an umbrella at Rossmann’s (only 2.50 €).
German students dress casually in everyday clothes that you would wear at a U.S. university, though women tend to dress up a bit more than men.
-
Bring a sufficient amount of summer and in-between clothing.
-
Casual items such as jeans, shirts, sweaters and light and heavy jackets are essential.
-
Women should also bring a dress or two, and men should bring a suit or sport coat and tie, for dress occasions.
-
For university IDs and other documents, bring about 8 passport-sized photos of yourself.
-
The electrical current in Europe is 220 volts at 50 cycles. In electric clocks or CD-players, the difference of 10 cycles is disastrous and can damage the appliance. If you need a clock radio or CD-player, it is advisable to buy one in Germany.
-
If you decide to bring any dual voltage appliances, make sure to bring an adaptor from the U.S. since the plugs are different in Germany.
-
Usually the dorms are not equipped with bed linens. You may rent a set in Hannover or you may buy a set upon arrival in Clausthal. Costs are about 35 € per set.
-
Bring the medication you might need and will not be able to get in Germany because you might need a prescription etc.
